Prepping the Ground for New Grass

soil prepped for laying sodWhether you want an instantly lush landscape or a fast lawn for erosion control, Bell Sod and Hydroseed has the grass to transform your yard. Sod and hydroseed each have countless benefits. Which grass installation method you use depends largely on preference and personal needs. Fall is the ideal time to install both hydroseed and sod lawns, but whether you like the instantly healthy landscape cultivated by laying sod or you prefer to wait for hydroseed to germinate, some aspects of lawn growth remain the same. If you’re installing an El Dorado Hills lawn, here’s how to prepare the soil for new grass.

Prepare the Soil for Sod or Seed

Whether you’re laying fresh California sod or you’ve scheduled an application of hydroseed, the first step in developing a healthy lawn is proper soil preparation.

  • Make sure grass will have at least 4 hours of sunlight per day
  • Clear away existing weeds and grass
  • Remove rocks and surface debris
  • Till and level the ground
  • Add additional topsoil if needed (fertilizer is included in hydroseed, but sod lawns will also need fertilizer at the time of installation)
  • Create a watering schedule with your Bell Sod and Hydroseed landscaper to make sure the grass gets appropriate moisture

Start ground preparation well before the delivery of sod or the arrival of a hydroseeding technician. Sod will wilt if left in the sun while a homeowner preps soil, and hydroseeders schedule each application so they can stay on track for each customer.

Do you want a rich, healthy lawn for aesthetics, erosion control, or conservation? Call Bell Sod and Hydroseed to get quality grass and fast-establishing hydroseed for your El Dorado Hills yard.
