El Nino: Is The Drought Here To Stay?

wet leaf

Saying the Pacific Coast needs a little rain is an understatement. With the craving of a wet winter, El Nino was expected to satisfy. So will it? The National Weather Service released it’s monthly weather update yesterday, and here’s what the experts had to say!

  • This year is expected to be the third strongest El Nino on record in terms of heat and redistribution.
  • Even so, there poses questions. The strength depends where and when the precipitation falls.
  • If the precipitation falls too far south, it won’t fill crucial reservoirs, or help solve the Pacific Northwest wildfires. Because the wildfire season hasn’t started yet, if the rain comes too late, there could be trouble.
  • In about a month, we should start seeing impacts on this winter. The only way to make predictions is to look at past years.
  • No matter how much rain we receive, it still may not be enough to kill the four year drought. It’s expected to be enough to help dramatically, but not solve the problem.

While you may be hesitant to install a sod lawn during the drought, it won’t hurt! There are plenty of ways to maintain a great lawn, even in these conditions.

  • Install drought tolerant sod
  • Water frequently! Once to soften the ground, one to penetrate the roots.
  • Use sprinklers early in the morning or late at night to avoid too much evaporation.

Need some help with your lawn during the drought? Bell Sod and Hydroseed has you covered! Questions or concerns? Give us a call at (916) 331-2040.
