Fall Lawn Maintenance Pt. 2

Sacramento Lawn Care Tips, Uncategorized · September 29, 2016

If you missed the first post in this series, check out our last blog: Fall Lawn Maintenance Part 1

We talked about weeding and aerating your lawn in order to keep it as healthy as possible during the upcoming fall and winter seasons, now let’s discuss seeding, top-dressing and fertilizer.

SeedFall Lawn Maintenance

Cool weather is not only a relief from the heat, but is also a great time for your lawn to grow strong roots without having to struggle the heat. Additionally, we should see more rain in the fall, but who knows with this crazy weather we have! If find your lawn is a bit patchy or has bare spots, consider over-seeding with a recommended blend from a trusted landscaper.

Apply A Top-Dressing

Once you’ve weeded and seeded, like with any plant, consider applying amendments to your soil. If you plan to reseed, top-dressing with an organic compost provides a rich planting bed for your seed. Compost can often be found for free through your city. Check with your city department to see if your area offers free compost (and often mulch). If you have bumpy spots, depressions or soggy spots, consult with a turf expert.

Fertilize

If you don’t feel the first steps are necessary, we urge you to consider this one: putting down a cool season lawn fertilizer. These lawn fertilizers contain a slow-release nitrogen that stays with the lawn until the spring allowing it to immediately “green-up.” They also usually contain a higher ratio of potassium, which helps grass recover from summer heat stress and foot traffic (which is great for those outdoor fall events).
