FAQ | Bell Sod & Hydroseed

Q: What is Hydroseeding?
A: Hydroseeding uses a mixture of water, seed, mulch, fertilizer, and tackifier (if needed for a sloping area) and is sprayed out over your lawn. The mulch that some companies, including ourselves, include in this mixture serves a couple of purposes. It creates a high moisture bed which produces the best conditions for the germination of the seed and also serves as a safeguard from runoff and birds so your finished product is an even carpet of lawn can develop and flourish.

Q: How much does it cost to Hydroseed?
A:  Hydroseeding is definitely a more economical choice when compared to sod. Even though you could have problems will the first seeding due to rain, birds, ect. it is still around 50% cheaper than buying sod for your entire yard. Be sure to take a look at the square footage of your lawn before deciding.

Q: What are the benefits of hydroseeding?

A: Hydroseed is the most cost-effective option. It takes less time than seed, but it still takes a little more time than sod. Hydroseed requires a lot of water, but in 4-6 weeks you will be able to cut the lawn. We pride ourselves on making your yard healthy and look good. Read more about the benefits here.

Q: When is the best time to install sod?

A: Sod can be installed at any point in the year but mid-fall and spring are the best times due to cooler temperatures while the grass is still growing. Read what is different about Bell Sod here.

Q: When is the best time to sod?

A: Again, sod can be installed at any point! Try mid-fall and spring for the best results. Read more about sod here.

Q: Can you overwater hydroseed?

A: Yes! If you see puddling on your lawn, that is a good sign it is time to stop watering it. Read more about hydroseed here.

Q: Hydroseeding vs Regular Seeding?

A: Hydroseeding is a lot faster than regular seeding. It costs a little bit more and requires more water but produces quicker results. Regular seeding disables you from being able to play on the grass for months while it grows.

Q: Is sod better than seed?

A: Sod is better than seed for some yards because it is quick to install, we offer the lowest price per square foot compared to big box store prices, and the grass takes off faster.

Q: How to prepare for sod installation?

A: To prepare for sod, you must clear the rocks and debris from the yard, till the existing soil, add topsoil if necessary, and apply “starter fertilizer” for an ideal surface for sod installation. Read our in-depth advice for preparing your yard for sod installation.

Q: How to prepare the ground for sod?

A: Preparing the Ground for Sod or Hydroseed requires a few essential steps to make sure you have the best yard in town. Read here to learn more about these steps.

Q: Sod vs Seed?

A: Read about the difference between Sod and Seed and the benefits of each here.

Q: What is the difference between Sod Vs Seed cost?

A: Sod is the most expensive, but it is instant grass and can be planted anytime. You can play on it right away! On the other hand, the seed is cheaper but it takes a while to grow grass and cannot be played on for months after installation. Read more about benefits and price advantages here.

Q: Sod vs seed vs hydroseed?

A: Sod is the fastest way to add value to your home, protect from erosion, and less irrigation will be needed. Hydroseed is more cost effective and has long-lasting quality with easier customization and better health. However, it requires a lot of water and about 4-6 weeks of patience. Seed is the cheapest to purchase and install but can take several months so this requires the most patience. Read more here.

Q: Can you Hydroseed Bermuda grass?

A: Yes, this is an effective method! However, consider factors of success.

Q: Can you seed over Hydroseed?

A: While this may work, it is not recommended because Hydroseed has an important factor of seed to soil contact for success. If you apply seed over the hydroseed, you may overcrowd your grass.

Q: Is Hydroseed better than seeding?

A: Hydroseed takes less time because it is mixed with a fertilizer layer, however it requires a lot more water.

Q: Should you water Hydroseed right away?

A:  Let the Hydroseed set for 24 hours and then water the Hydroseed in the morning or night based on the temperature of the day, and stop watering if you see puddling.
