How to Clean and Store Your Outdoor Furniture to Enjoy Again Next Year

Sacramento Lawn Care Tips, Uncategorized · December 8, 2015

Storing & Cleaning Patio FurnitureThe changing of seasons can mean a number of things- changes in weather, travel plans, school, etc. It can also mean less time
outside. One item often overlooked when preparing for fall/winter, is preparing your outdoor furniture for the winter. We know what you’re thinking- it’s December! That’s OK! It’s not too late to prevent further damages from the weather change.

Cleaning

Before any storing is done, it’s important to clean your furniture. No matter what type you may have (wicker, wood, plastic or metal) the first step is to wipe with a dry cloth- remove pollen, dirt and those spider webs. For a deeper cleaning, after you havescrubbing brush wiped with a dry cloth, “wash” them with a mild detergent and warm water. Resins and plastics may clean better with a little bit of added oxygen bleach.

For the cushions, first and foremost, check to the instructions for the manufacturer’s recommendations. If for whatever reason they are unavailable, again, use a dry cloth to wipe off as much dust and pollen as you can.  Then clean your cushions with a sturdy hand brush, mild detergent and warm water. Make sure you allow ample time to ensure they dry thoroughly.

Storage

Once your furniture has been cleaned and is dry, place a sturdy cover over it, and secure it as needed. If you have a place to store them, we recommend moving the items first, then covering the items. It is recommend, especially you live in an area
prone to flooding, to place a 2″ x 4″ plank on the ground, then set the legs on the planks so that they are elevated and less exposed to water damage. For umbrellas, make sure they are folded and covered (moths love a good umbrellas snack).

cushion storageOnce they are completely dry, store them inside a clear plastic storage box (to insure no dyes transfer) or fabric storage container. Like umbrellas, their cloth is subject to insect damage, mold and mildew, so it is important to store them in a clean, dry area.

Last but not least, be sure to take proper care of your lawn during it’s “off season.” Should you have questions about your sod or hydroseed, contact the professionals here at Bell’s Sod and Hydroseed.
