How to Keep Cut Sod Fresh

Growing healthy sod depends on a number of factors: the quality of the sod purchased, how well you prepare the soil, and lawn maintenance during the first week weeks. But one factor many contractors and homeowners ignore is pre-installation sod care. Keep sod fresh for a healthier summer lawn.

How to Keep Sod Fresh

Installing fresh sod is the best way to guarantee the quick establishment and lasting health of your Sacramento lawn. Removing organic debris, tilling the soil, and adding water and fertilizer helps grass grow quickly, but good lawn care practices are useless if the sod dies before installation. Guarantee a gorgeous yard with these tips for keeping sod fresh before installation.

  • girls installing grassSchedule your delivery wisely. At Bell Sod and Hydroseed, we’re happy to work with your timetable. Schedule your sod delivery when you have time to lay new grass immediately. We recommend early morning hours, when the sun is less harsh on freshly-cut sod.
  • Keep it shaded. The hot Sacramento sun is hard on fresh sod. No matter what time of day you schedule your delivery, make sure your sod is placed in the shade.
  • Keep cut sod hydrated. If your sod installation takes longer than a few hours, it’s important to keep the roots wet. Lightly spray sod pallets along the sides to prevent your grass from drying out or turning brown.
  • Install sod within 72 hours. Bell Sod and Hydroseed cuts turfgrass fresh. We recommend installing sod as soon as possible upon delivery, but if necessary, cut sod will hold up for 3 days if watered and maintained.
