Nothing looks worse than a patchy brown lawn! Luckily this is an easy fix; your yard will be looking smooth and green in no time with these simple tips.

Prevent a patchy lawn with these tips and tricks!
Prevent a patchy lawn with these tips and tricks!

Why is it patchy?

There are many reasons you may have brown spots in your lawn. Keep in mind, brown spots are not the same as bare spots. The brown patches indicate that the grass has died, while bare patches are spots where grass refuses to grow. Take a look at this helpful article to see what causes brown patches in your lawn!

What Steps Do I Take?

Step 1: Prepare your yard for success. The easiest way to make a damaged spot ready for repair is to dig out the area. Dig out all the bare area to about 4 inches deep, and fill with a rich soil or compost. You want it to be loose, but not too loose! Watering is a great way to settle the new soil without over-compacting it.

Step 2: Sod or seed? There are pros and cons to both! Sod is a tad more expensive than seed, but it’s also the quickest way to fix your lawn. Seed is less expensive, but also requires a little more attention. Check out our sod and seed pages on our website to find out which choice is right for you!

Step 3: Take good care of your lawn! After your lawn is fixed, it’s important to keep an eye on it so this doesn’t happen again! Both sod and seed repairs should be blocked off with stakes and string, as it gives time for the roots to grow without disruption. Both sod and seed should never dry out (note: sod needs a little less watering than seed). Avoid all fertilizers with an NPK number, and use a seaweed fertilizer instead.

Bell Sod and Hydroseed is happy to help you with your sod and seed needs! Give us a call at (916) 331-2040 and we’ll get you one step closer to a healthy lawn.
