Hydroseed 101: What is Hydroseed? How does it work?

Sacramento Hydroseed, Uncategorized · August 30, 2016

You’ve heard of it, but what is hydroseed? How does it work?

Hydroseeding is an inexpensive, effective, and quick way of starting a lawn or as a solution for erosion control. Here at Bell Sod & Hydroseed, we combine water, seed, mulch, fertilizer, and tackifier (if needed for sloping areas) to create the hydroseed mixture. We then spray it out with a large hose onto your yard. Because of the mulch, a high moisture bed is created for the best germination of the seed.

The mulch protects against runoff and birds from getting to the seed for an even carpet of lawn to develop. The mulch and moisture combination shelters the seeds from sunlight, wind, and soil erosion in addition to helping the seed create a bond with the soil. What is hydroseed?

Fun Fact: the mulch is dyed green so it’s not an eye sore. Since the ingredients are natural, the mixture goes through a natural decomposition process, so when it’s done doing it’s job helping the seeds germinate, there’s no need to remove it.

Benefits of hydroseed

Since hydroseed is sprayed onto the yard, this means you can start a lawn on almost any kind of surface, whether it’s uneven or sloped. It’s great for erosion control and improving soil quality. Since it uses a mulch mixture, growth is fast due to the many nutrients surrounding the seeds. You should typically see first shoot growths within a week and be able to mow your lawn for the first time in less than a month. Did you get a patchy area? Simply re-spray the area.

If you’re considering hydroseed and have any questions, feel free to give us a call at (916) 331-2040 or simply fill out our contact form.
