The Advantages of Laying Sod in the Winter

While the winter isn’t typically known as the ideal time for planting grass, if you and yours spend a fair of time outdoors, and are considering sodding or re-sodding your lawn, now could be an ideal time to do so. Why now?

When the weather is cooler, it means the sod retains more water. Freshly laid sod needs more, and more frequent watering, typically twice a day. When temperatures are low enough, the grass will freeze and retain more water. It is crucial not to over water during these periods, as it will kill the grass. Sod that is laid in the winter typically needs to be watered 1-2 times a week.*

Fresh sod should not be “touched” for at least a month. This means children playing on it, dogsPlaying kids and even grilling in the backyard should be kept to a minimum. The grass will not have good roots until it turns green in the spring, so it is best to keep wear and tear down to as little as possible. Being that temperatures are down, there is less activity outdoors, making this part of the process much easier this time of year.

If your parts of your sod is brown, or turns brown don’t immediately assume it has died. Grass like other plants, goes dormant in the cold season. Only purchase sod from a professional who will stand behind it. We at Bell Sod & Hydroseed We back our productsstand behind our sod and services. We know not only our products, but the area as well, and will only provide you sod that will be the green and beautiful lawn you envision. While brown is a lovely color, it’s not the color you want your five year old coloring in school when drawing pictures of home.

So if you’re looking into having the front, back or both yards to enjoy in the coming season, think of sodding now. Should you have any questions, give us a call at 916-331-2040 or simply fill out a contact form and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

*This is on average. Each yard is unique and a care plan for you will be given upon purchase.
