Best Practices for Cutting your Sod Lawn
One thing that many people over look is cutting their lawn. It’s often viewed as a chore needed to keep up curb appeal. While it is needed to beautify your lawn, there is a science behind properly cutting your fresh sod lawn.
10-14 Days
Is the amount of time you need to wait for you newly laid sod lawn before cutting. Do NOT cut more than one third of the blade. This can cause “scalping” and damage your lawn. Do you have trees that are dropping leaves like a dog sheds in July? Remove the leaves and rake or blow the leaves off as quickly as possible. The tannic acid and shade created by the debris can kill your new sod.
Cut Your Lawn at the Right Height
A common misconception is to cut your lawn shorter so that you have to mow less often. By “scalping” your lawn you create weak new growth with roots that aren’t growing as they should. This allows weeds to thrive in your once thick lawn.
The Basics of Lawn Cutting
Your lawn should be at least 2″ high AFTER you cut it; three inches during cool seasons and shady lawns. Don’t let your pride get in the way -grab a ruler. Never cut off more than 1/3 the blade at any one time. By letting the grass take it’s natural progression, it will grow slower, look greener and form deep roots that crowd out weeds naturally.
